Abseiling and Ziplining in Malta

A gorgeous day featuring clear blue skies, warm weather and nature giving us one final display of stunning beauty before surrendering to the summer heat. Typical mid-May day here on the Maltese islands, specifically a very quiet area in the West of Malta. The imposing cliffs and crystal blue lagoons swirling beneath us offer the perfect setting for a day of abseiling and ziplining for myself and Jean.

We’re at Mtahleb with around 20 other people and we’re getting ready for our first taste at these activities. We sample several languages during the short bus trip that got us here. It’s a multinational group as expected, since this event was organized by Will’s Friends, a Facebook group for expats and foreigners in Malta. Being a member in this group means you get to meet lots of cool people and discover Malta through the several excursions organized by the group leader Will Abela.  Of course, joining is free, so if you’re visiting Malta or staying here for a few months, go ahead and join us!

The location is truly stunning, and as the temperature rises our confidence magically builds up until it’s our turn to have a go at the zipline. Jean glides comfortably to the other cliff, it doesn’t seem to be so difficult after all. With some encouragement, I have a go at it myself and feel a rush of adrenaline and freedom as I rip through the skies. First challenge completed, now to try abseiling next.

This one looks a bit harder, and again Jean has a go at it first. Again, he masters it but warns that it is more challenging than the zipline. I’m still quite afraid of heights and hesitate at the top of the cliff, even giving up after a botched first attempt. However the rest of the group and the instructors encourage me to keep trying and relax, lean back and get into the flow. This time I get it right and descend slowly but steadily, even managing a few smiles in Jean’s direction as he captures the moment from another part of the cliff.

Fast forward a few hours, some more zipline crossings, a nice lunch and it’s time to head back. We’re worn out but leave with a glow of satisfaction and a happy feeling that lingers on throughout the rest of the day.
