How to get to Doi Suthep and Bhubing Palace

Published Jan 28, 2013 - 6 Comments

Doi Suthep is a very famous and beautiful temple in Chiang Mai. Its actual name is Wat Phra That. The temple is nestled near the top of Doi Suthep (Mount Suthep), so all people just call the temple Doi Suthep. It’s a place which you can’t miss out on.

To get to Doi Suthep you can catch a Tuk-Tuk or a Songtheaw. Drivers might offer you a price of 400 baht (10 euro) to make your trip private. But if you are on a budget, head to the north of the old city near to Chang Puak Gate where songtheaws depart directly to Doi Suthep. You will have to wait until there will be 10 people in the van. A one way trip will cost you 50 baht (1.25 euro). If you use a car or motorbike you can easily get to this place by yourself. Be sure that you are an experienced driver as it’s a 15 km trip up the winding mountain road!

When you arrive to Doi Suthep you will find, as elsewhere in Chiang Mai, a market full of different souvenirs and food. Scale the 300 steps and you will arrive to the area of the Temple. Buy a ticket 30 baht (0,70 euro) per 1 person and enter to enjoy the atmosphere of this wonderful place!

Another great place to visit is Bhubing Palace. It is the winter residence of the royal family in Chiang Mai. The palace is also the royal guesthouse for prominent state visitors from abroad. To get the place you just need to catch a songtheaw from the “Doi Suthep” stop. It will cost you another 30 baht and the trip will take just a few minutes. You can find all the information about tickets, opening hours and a dress code for Bhubing Palace here.

Very good post. I was hesitant about going to both of these places because of 1000’s of bahts for transportation. I’m so glad I stumbled across your post. Now I’m really excited to go.

Hello Ruby, do you mean to go up the stairs to the temple? To tell you the truth I haven’t seen any vehicles and I am not sure if there, as the access to the temple is directly by the stairs, only, as far as I know. All the people were climbing the stairs, old people as well.
