Visiting Seville Cathedral and The Alcázar – My Experience & a Few Useful Tips

Updated Jun 30, 2017 (first published Oct 2012) - Leave a Comment

Seville Cathedral is one of the largest cathedrals in the Christian world after St. Peter’s Cathedral in Vatican and St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. The Cathedral of Seville is a huge beautiful monument, which was built in the 15th – 16th centuries on the place of the Main Mosque of the city. To visit the Cathedral you will need to buy a ticket which costs 8.5 euros (without an audio guide). The interior of the Cathedral is striking in its beauty and grandeur.

On the eastern side of the Seville Cathedral between the gates, which are used as the entrance to the orange patio, rises a 93 meter tower – the Giralda. It was originally built as a minaret of the Great Mosque in the early 12th century by Moors. Later in the 16th century it was layered by a belfry and a windvane 4 meters high in the shape of the female figure, with the Emperor Constantine’s banner in her hands, symbolizing the Christian faith.

Just a few steps away from the Seville Cathedral you will find the Royal Alcázar Palace. The construction of this magnificent palace was begun by the order of the Moorish rulers, but finished by the Christian kings in the second half of the 14th century after the expulsion of the Moors.

The price of the ticket to the Alcázar is 8.5 euros (without the audio guide). It will take at least one hour and a half  to visit this beautiful place. Lovely gardens, luxurious rooms with fountains and ponds – you would certainly enjoy the leisurely stroll and feeling the spirit of the olden times. If you get hungry, it’s possible to have a bite at the small cafe on the territory of the Alcázar. However the prices there are two times higher than outside the Palace. We regret we didn’t bring some snacks, as it would be a great place for a little picnic on a hot day in the shade of the English Garden of the Palace.

The Cathedral and the Alcázar are the must visit places. If you have not been there, you have not been to Seville!
